Mogadishu, Sunday, January 5, 2025 – The Prime Minister of the Federal Government of Somalia, H.E. Hamza Abdi Barre, presided over the handover ceremony between the incoming Minister of Family Affairs and Human Rights, Amb. Khadija Mohamed Al-Makhzoumi, and the outgoing Minister, Gen. Bashir Mohamed Jama. The event took place at the Ministry’s headquarters.
The ceremony was attended by members of the Council of Ministers, Members of Parliament, government agency officials, and representatives from various sectors of society.
Amb. Khadija Mohamed Al-Makhzoumi, who previously served as Minister of Environment and Climate Change, officially assumed her new role at the Ministry of Family Affairs and Human Rights. She commended the work done by her predecessor, Minister Bashir Mohamed Jama, and acknowledged his dedication to national initiatives, including the 2024-2029 National Child Protection Plan and other strategic development efforts.
On the other hand, Gen. Bashir Mohamed Jama took over the leadership of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, highlighting the progress made during his tenure at the Ministry of Family Affairs, including advancing child welfare policies and implementing key national development strategies. He praised the Ministry’s staff for their commitment and hard work.
Amb. Al-Makhzoumi pledged to strengthen and expand the Ministry’s efforts, ensuring the continuation of critical national programs aimed at protecting human rights, empowering women, and supporting vulnerable communities.
Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre emphasized the essential roles of both ministries in the government’s national agenda. He highlighted the Ministry of Environment’s critical contribution to global climate action and environmental protection and underscored the Ministry of Family Affairs’ pivotal role in safeguarding the rights of Somali citizens, particularly women and children.
The Prime Minister also stressed the need for close collaboration between ministries to achieve the government’s broader objectives, including environmental sustainability, climate resilience, human rights promotion, and support for vulnerable communities.
